Thanks for stopping by to check out rEvolutions!
The initial attraction of this platform was the free newsletter, but the rapid rollout of new features over the last few weeks has made Substack feel like the perfect place for me to share with you via a whole range of media that I’ve been itching to try, and to build a community of people who want to connect in a way that feels meaningful and true.
This will obviously include the writing that has become so important to my processing over the past couple of years, but also audio and perhaps most excitingly, the new chat function! So often I find myself with things to say, thoughts to share; but having to choose between sitting down to write, doing one of the myriad other jobs on my list, or nourishing my soul through my self-care rituals, which have become more important than ever.
The beauty of Substack is that I can take a bath and create an audio file, I might record a podcast on one of my long walks or on my commute to work. If it’s just a little thought that’s occurred to me, and I want to know what others think, or have a conversation about it, I can start a thread. I don’t have to overthink about what picture will gain the most traction for my words to be seen, or select the right hashtags, or post at the right time etc. In short, I can get out of my own damn way!
I still prefer the aesthetic flexibility of the fluid engine over at SquareSpace for displaying visual art, so I will be keeping it as my online photography portfolio (along with my Pic-Time galleries for client work). I’ll include links to updates in my monthly newsletter and whenever the imagery is integral what I am sharing. But I’ve been slowly moving journal posts over from my website (for some reason the import feature did not like them!) and have removed the direct links from the menu there.
The thing I miss the most about Instagram in its current guise compared with when I started out, is how I could write a post and the comments beneath would be a true conversation. They would often serve as a prompt which would spawn the next post, and then another…. But there’s no point moping about what has gone, it’s gone for a reason and it’s as I say, ‘if you can’t see it, perhaps you need to be it’.
With my photography I set out to create the art that I felt was missing from my world; the art in which I could see myself reflected. Now I want to build the community that I am missing; see myself reflected in it, and hope that others can see themselves too. I’ve known for a while that Instagram isn’t the right platform for what I want to do, say, or create, but I didn’t know, or have the bandwidth to find out what was. I guess there’s only one way to find out!
Substack bills itself as ‘The home for great writing’.
It’s now the home for my writing, and more!
